Laptop won't turn on? 5 checks before you panic.
Your files are almost always still safe. These checks find the cause in a few minutes on Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer and most other laptops.

Step by step
Check the charger and its light
Try another wall outlet. If the charging light stays off or blinks, the adapter or the power jack may be the problem.
Do a hard reset
Unplug the charger, remove the battery if it comes out, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then reconnect the charger and try again.
Listen and look
If you hear the fan or see keyboard lights but the screen stays black, plug in an external monitor to test the display.
Remove accessories
Unplug USB drives, docks and memory cards, then start with only the charger connected.
Let it cool down
A laptop that shut down hot may refuse to start until it cools for 15 minutes.
When to call a technician
Call a technician if there is still no sign of life. DC power jack repair starts from $49, battery replacement from $99 and screen replacement from $159, and we can recover your files if the laptop can't be saved. See repairs and prices

A MacBook that looks dead is often just a flat battery, a bad charger or a dark screen on a Mac that is actually running.
Start with the quick fixes that solve most Wi-Fi problems, then find out if it's one device, the router or your internet provider.
Heat slows a laptop down and wears out the battery. Most overheating comes from blocked vents, dust or a program running in the background.
How you get back in depends on the kind of account you sign in with. None of these steps erase your files.
