Forgot your Windows password? Here's how to get back in.
How you get back in depends on the kind of account you sign in with. None of these steps erase your files.

Step by step
Microsoft account (an email address)
On the sign in screen choose "I forgot my password", or reset it from another device at account.microsoft.com, then sign in with the new password.
Local account with security questions
Type a wrong password once, choose "Reset password" and answer the questions you set up.
Use a PIN or another admin account
If you set up a PIN, it still works. Another administrator on the PC can reset your password in Settings, Accounts.
Avoid "reset this PC"
Resetting Windows gets you in but can remove your files and apps. Try everything else first.
When to call a technician
Still locked out? Password reset and admin rights start from $49: a technician gets you back in without erasing your files. See repairs and prices
